Abstract
Background : Although emergency room psychiatrists are often faced with evaluating and planning treatment for patients who abuse alcohol, there is limited information about the characteristics of emergency room patients with alcohol related disorders.

Method : A 1-year prospective study of 255 consecutive patients was conducted in the Wonkwang university psychiatric hospital emergency room. The authors describe the demographic and clinical characteristics(esp. suicidality and violence) of all patients. The subjects were diagnosed according to DSM-¥³

Result : In the 255 patients, the 88 patients(34.5%) diagnosed as having an alcohol related disorders. They were older, and were more often male, employed, and married than patients with disorders not related by alcohol abuse. Suicidality and violence were not statistically significant between the two groups.

Conclusion : The paucity of information on these patients is inconsistent with their significant numbers and emphasizes a need for a greater commitment to research in this area
